Christmas Weekend in Stratford [2023.12]

 

처음 시작은 정말 단순하게, 미시사가에서 브런치 먹고 노스욕까지 돌아가기 싫다였다. 

왜냐면 하루 후에 다시 워터루로 가야 하는데 이미 1/3 온 동선이 아까워서...

그러다 보니 워터루 근처에 여행겸 가볼 곳이 있나? 해서 별생각 없이 구글맵을 줌인 줌아웃 하다가 문득 생각난 곳이 Stratford였다 (결국 더 멀리 가야 되긴 했지만).

 

워터루 사는 고등학생이라면 셰익스피어를 배우면서 한 번은 가본 작은 town. Shakespeare Festival로 유명한 Stratford는 워터루를 지나쳐 40분 정도를 차 타고 더 가야 하는 곳이고, 사실 겨울에는 딱히 갈만한 이유가 없다. 연극 시즌도 끝나고 특별한 관광지도 아니고. 

 

하지만 나는 small town의 아기자기한 다운타운 스트리트를 사랑하고... 소소한 골목골목을 좋아하고... 내가 익숙하지 않은 surrounding에서 하루를 보내는 것을 a type of travel로 생각하는 사람이기 때문에, 목적지 결정. 

 

However, the options for accomodations were limited and pricy even during the down season in Stratford. I had to compromise and go with the moderately priced place with the thought that it's worth it since I'll be staying in most of the time during my stay. I chose Edison's Inn in downtwon Stratford. The rooms were decorated tastefully and the reviews were good!

 

브런치를 먹으며 수다가 길어져서 (ㅎㅎas always) 도착했을 땐 이미 어두워지고 있었다. 거기다 며칠 내 gloomy and rainy 했기 때문에 날도 꾸물꾸물... 얼른 체크인하고 저녁 먹고 뒹굴뒹굴해야지! 하고 방에 들어섰는데,   

진짜 토마스 에디슨에 캐나다에 왔을때 지냈던 곳이라 Edison's Inn 이라 지어졌다.

 

 

방이 사진만큼 이뻐서 사진 잔뜩 찍고, 기분 좋아져서 와이파이 연결을 하려는데 자꾸 연결이 됐다 안 됐다 하는 것. 두둥.

Also the screen mirroring to the tv wasn't working at all. It seemed like the wifi connection had a technical issue overall. 

호텔보다는 Inn (b&b)의 개념이라 에어비엔비처럼 주인하고 바로 소통을 해야 했는데 다행히 주인이 내가 저녁을 먹으러 나와있는 동안 방에 와서 상황을 봐주기로 했다. 

 

멀리 가긴 그렇고 같은 건물 1층에 리뷰가 좋은 식당이 있어서 거기를 시도해 보기로 했다. 주말 저녁인지라 예약 없이 괜찮을까 했지만 오픈 시간 조금 넘어가서 그런가 다행히 자리가 있었다.

평소에는 잘 안 마시는 칵테일을 1차로 시켰다. I'm not a big fan of cocktails with explorative ingredients so I tried to stay within the safe traditional options. However the taste of tequila was a bit strong in this one. I believe this was the "nice" margarita with a vanila syrup whereas the "naughty" margarita had some spicy syrup in it. 

 

어두워서 사진이 디테일하게 보이진 않지만 메인으로 먹었던 샐러드. I know I normally would NOT order a salad as a meal but this one was called "all day breakfast salad". So more like a destructed breakfast platter in salad with potato, bacon, bitter greens, poached egg and hp vinaigrette? 배가 엄청 고프진 않아서 시킨 건데 맛있고 배불렀다. 소스까지 싹싹 긁어먹음. 

 

사실 메인까지만 먹고 나오려고 했는데 뭔가 여행 삼아온 건데 디저트를 안 먹고 가기가 좀 아쉬워서 시켜본 chocolate mousse torte. 맛이 진한데 너 무안 달고 너무 무겁지도 않고 - 올려진 생크림 하고 잘 어울려서 깔끔하게 비웠다. 

Inn 주인한테 올라간다고 연락하고 계산을 하려는데 서버가 이미 계산이 끝났다고 해서 깜짝 놀랐다. The owner had paid for my dinner in extension of his gesture for the wifi issue. He also moved me to a separate room, which was twice the size as my initial room. This one was a suite with two bedrooms. What a treat for Christmas times!

두번째방.

 

덕분에 반신욕도 하고 큰 스크린으로 덕질도 하고 놀다가 뻗어 자고. 

body clock 때문에 7시 반에 깨서 미적거리면서 침대에 있다가, 2시까지 late check-out 해도 된다는 문자를 받고 미리 봐둔 카페에 아침을 테이크아웃 하러 갔다. 

 

Cafe Bouffon이라는 바로 근처 카페가 10시에 연다고 해서 일부러 기다렸다가 오픈시간에 맞춰서 갔는데 it wasn't open?! I wasn't the only one that was misled by the hours operation on Google Maps as another group was wandering as confused as I was. Instead of waiting, I headed over to Balzac's which was 5 min away by foot. To maximize my stay, I brought coffee, breakfast sandwich and greek yogurt cup back to the room and attempted to watch Rebel Moon. I couldn't make it through the movie because it felt like a Dune/Hunger Games mash up which wasn't done properly (personal opinion).

 

실컷 늘어져 있다가 한 시반쯤 나와서 짐을 차에 싣고 타운을 걸어 다니기 시작했다. 다행히 비는 안 오고 구름만 꼈지만, 필카앱에 사진들이 너무 이쁘게 찍혔다.   

여름에 너무 이쁠거 같은데 비온 뒤라 지금은 진흙투성이 - 접근이 어려움.

다음엔 여기서 영화를 꼭 보고싶다! It's the world's smallest movie theatre. The old furniture and interior are kept and you can book for private events too!

약간 즉흥적으로 계획한 거라 당일까지 아무도 가는 걸 모른 여행(?) getaway(?) 긴 했지만 it was a good opportunity to bring back the sensation of how I love exploring new places. I enjoyed being completely on my own, treating myself to a nice dinner, walking around a foreign (haha) place and being away from home. It was a great way to start the Christmas weekend as I headed to Waterloo in the afternoon.  그리고 친절한 host를 만나서 덕분에 결과적으로는 너무 기분좋은 여행이되었다.
